Website Security: Is Your Site Vulnerable to Hackers?

Main Image

In today’s digital age, cyber security is becoming increasingly important, and the threat of a company’s website or server being hacked is very real. So, how can your company prevent a website hack?

A huge factor in preventing a hack is identifying the right CMS (Content Management System) tool to run your website. We see many clients using popular CMS tools, such as WordPress or Joomla, that started as blogging sites and have risen to popularity because they make it easy to quickly build smaller sites using pre-defined themes. These sites are easy to manage and can be set up completely without the help of a developer, but they do have their downsides.

Over the past 10 years, these CMS tools have risen in popularity. Now they are used as much more than just a blogging tool; many companies use them as CMS tools and integrate different combinations of plugins and parts of different themes to create a site that looks well designed. However, this opens the door to many inconsistencies and security vulnerabilities. For those of you who aren’t developers, many of these tools use PHP, a very simple programming language. PHP is easy to follow and easy to learn, making it a great tool for businesses to build a website quickly, but a prime target for hackers. Data suggests that more than 70% of all sites built in PHP are vulnerable to be hacked. With all the different plugins and constant updates, security can become compromised if the plugins are not correctly updated.

There is a solution, however.  AVALA uses Umbraco, a CMS tool built on .NET and is only compiled and encrypted when brought over to the server -- which is only readable by the application or website you are accessing. We own all of our physical servers and have 100% control over them, closing the door on the security breaches you’ll run into on a PHP tool. While these CMS tools are used by mostly small companies, Umbraco is being used by big companies like Heinz, Microsoft, and many IT companies.

AVALA manages, owns, and maintains all of our own equipment, we don’t leave it up to a 3rd party. All features on our websites are built in house, by developers, using no 3rd party plugins at all. This means that we know the deepest inner-workings of everything on all of our sites and how to scale and code our sites and applications based on client requests. We have unlimited ability to alter and design sites in whatever way we want to. You’re not going to see a reorganization of one site over and over again because we have “templates” or “themes” we use; we build each site from scratch and give marketing teams full control over updating content at the brand and content level.

By using AVALA and getting started with Umbraco, you’ll protect your site from unwanted hackers and get a fresh, unique site.
